Shakespeare 2021 Details!

Hey all!

I have a note from this year’s Shakespeare coach, and we wanna help you get ready for your first audition! We are only about two weeks out from the start of school and a little over three weeks till audition, so here we go with a little note from Noah:

“It’s Shakespeare time! I am excited for the opportunity to work with the y'all :) My name is Noah and this will be my third year coaching with Alta.

Why get involved with Shakespeare?? So many reasons!! I may be a bit bias, but I believe that being a part of the Shakespeare Team will help you grow as an actor more than virtually anything else you can do.  Plus, you get to be part of an incredible team and go on one of the greatest trips of all year! No matter what grade you are, I would encourage each and everyone of you to seriously consider being involved. ALL ages and students are welcome- even if you have yet to take a theatre class.  It was definitely a highlight of my Highschool experience (yes, I am an Alta Alumni. Go Hawks!) It has been even more incredible to be on the coaching side and to work with talented student like you! So, come audition!

This year, we have a very unique script picked for our ensemble scene. As rebellion breaks out across the whole of England, a young character named Holland tries to seeks honor to expunge the dishonor they currently feel for not fighting with Henry the 5th years ago. Along the way, they go through a transformative journey as they join with the rebellious rabble lead by one of the most chaotic characters in all of Shakespeare's works -- Jack Cade. As Jack slowly (or not so slowly) descends into a power hungry anarchy, Holland goes on a hero's journey to discover what they are truly true to. 'Follow your spirit, All things be ready if our minds be so!'

To get started, look for a monologue that you really feel you can get behind. You can find a good list of monologues at  https://www.bard.org/competition under the Shakespeare Scene Resources section or at https://www.shakespeare-monologues.org/home. I look forward to seeing you on the 24th!”

More information about auditions will be posted on the call-board outside of the green room in the PAC the first day of school, including packets to go over with your parents. All who are on team get to perform in Night of Shakespeare on September 29th and attend/fund the trip to Cedar City for competition Sept. 30-October 2nd. Rehearsals will be most days after school at 5pm-7pm starting August 25th, with times beginning earlier closer to competition. We are excited to see what y’all prepare for us and are stoked to get the show on its feet! 🎭

Cost for the trip will be $357 total!

Theatre Council 2021-2022

A huge thank you to all who applied and interviewed for next year's Theatre Council positions.  There were MANY qualified candidates, which may our decisions rather difficult.  Thank you ALL for being amazingly prepared and wiling to serve.  We are asking current and new council to meet together on Monday, May 10th in the Theatre Room from 2:30-4pm.  It will probably wrap-up earlier than that, but we need to take time to talk about and plan the banquet.  Thank you again so much to all and congrats to our new Theatre Council for the 2021-2022 school year!

Theatre Council Interview Sign-ups 2021-2022

All applicants must complete an interview on Monday, May 3rd and then the new council will be announced on the evening of Thursday, May 6th. Interviews will be with Miss Struiksma and Natalie Hood.  If chosen for next year’s council  you will need to prepare to attend your first joint meeting with the old and new council the following week.  With student-directed one-act rehearsals, my bet is the meeting will take place on Monday, May 10th, but it is TBD.

Please sign-up in a time-slot on the link below. I will have six people sign-up in each section and all in that time-slot will be “on deck.” When we finish one person, we will call in another.  This will hopefully allow us to finish in a timely manner and stay on schedule. Please sign-up for a spot ASAP and definitely by Sunday afternoon so I know you have seen this and accept an interview spot.

My advice for the interviews is to take a breath, drink some water, and just be yourself. :)

SDOA Show Descriptions 2021

Here are some show descriptions for the upcoming senior Student-directed One-acts - auditions will be after school on Tuesday the 20th and you can sing up for a time and grab an info packet on the call board in the PAC Green Room. You only need a one-minute monologue to audition, so come get involved!

"War Brides" directed by Sara Riches and Savanna Seal
War Brides is about a mother and her two daughters as they face the challenges that times of war bring. Amelia is uncertain of whether to marry because of her sister Hedwig’s insistance against it and her mother’s desire to see her wed.

"Midnight at World's End" directed by Natalie Hood and Chloe Barrus
At the remote, old-fashioned World's End Diner, a woman named Jill is about to commence work on her first, life-changing assignment: to manage the fate of Emily Hulse. But nothing in Fate Management is easy, and Jill must rely on her colleagues and her instincts to work against fate's unpredictability and make Emily's future a success.

"Battlefiedl Synergy" directed by Lucas Hamilton and Chandler King
Battlefield Synergy is a dark comedy piece set in the trenches of a war between two rival fast-food restaurants where a group of soldiers are trying to get out of a dangerous mission to reclaim an enemy drive-thru.

The Secret Origin of Mojo Man" directed by Abbie Ricord and Addison Horrocks
A “super hero” reveals he has powers that he uses for his own personal gain to his best friend and talks him into a competition of who can get the girl... get ready for a good time!

"Baby's Coming Home" directed by Dylan Schreiber and Bree Wasden
Our piece is called My Baby's Coming Home. This piece discusses love, relationships, family, and war; and the way life can shift and change when you aren't looking. We want to teach the message of taking advantage of your life while you are living it, as someday it could be cut short. The world can be a cruel place, so it is all the more important to embrace it when it's loving and kind. This show stars four characters: Beth, James, Henry, and Jess, and we are looking for actors who can show emotional vulnerability and honesty in their acting, as well as actors with the ability to make strong choices. We cannot wait to work with you!

"Pinocchio" directed by Dylan Thomas and Caleb Christensen
Pinocchio is an all around the clock comedy with lots of wise retorts, fun-loving humor, and absolute chaos. With help from the audience and Gepetto our protagonist Pinocchio with be fighting against a bribed Judge and chaotic Jury to show how you can always find the good in any bad situation.
