Alta High School's Theatre Department: Our 2026-2027 Season!

Our Annual Night of Shakespeare will show off our hard work as we prepare to attend the National Shakespeare Competition in Cedar City, Utah from October 1st-3rd, 2026!
We will have four amazing duo/trio scenes and five monologues to share, as well as our incredible 10-minute Ensemble Scene from Macbeth; directed by Linze Struiksma and Lyndsey McKinnon.
AUDITIONS for Ensemble Scene: August 20th, 2026
*You will need a one-minute Shakespearian Monologue for auditions.

There is a MANDATORY parent/guardian meeting on August 19th at 6pm for anyone auditioning for Shakespeare (or going on the trip) OR auditioning for Musical.
If you want to audition, a parent or guardian needs to be present at that meeting!

This coming year's musical will be Irving Berlin's White Christmas! This delightful story will include some incredible focus on choreography and even include some jump-roping tap dance. There will be some summer tap classes offered (completely optional) and more will be posted about these in a few weeks.
This show will be directed by Lindsey Cline (Assistant Director to be chosen at auditions).
AUDITIONS: August 26th and 27th, 2026
*You will need a 30-60 second cutting to sing from a Musical Theatre song (from a musical) and will then complete a dance call that same evening.

Alta Theatre's Annual Fundraiser Night will continue on with our Murder Mystery Dinner.  Two times for dinner will be offered (5:00pm and 7:30pm) and you will not want to miss this show!  The theme will be announced on November 24th with casting announcements, but trust me... it's gonna be amazing.
Directed and Created by Addilyn Covington (Assistant to be announced at auditions)
AUDITIONS: November 24th, 2026
*You will sign up for an audition time and come play 5-10 minutes of Improv Games to analyze those skills. Watch for Improv Club dates to be trained ahead of time!

Antigone is the quintessential and epic story from Sophocles about the power of using one's voice for the things they believe in. We will be performing a brand new adaption of the play and using shadow work along with other powerful ways of story-telling! A condensed version of this piece will ALSO be used as the Region/State One-Act to compete on March 18th and then April 15th or 16th,
This show will be directed by Linze Struiksma (Assistant Director to be chosen at auditions).
AUDITIONS: December 15th, 2026
*You will need a one-minute modern Monologue for auditions.

REGION AND STATE IE AUDITIONS: These will also be on December 15th, 2026 and more information will be posted about these the beginning of November 2026. You MAY use the same monologue for R&S auditions as for Antigone auditions. These are six categories you will be considered for with Region/State Competition: Pantomime, Contemporary Scenes, Classical Scenes, Humorous Monologues, Dramatic Monologues, and Musical Theatre.
*If you want to be considered for the Musical Theatre Category you will need 30-60 seconds of a musical theatre piece and the on-minute monologue.
Competition Dates are March 18th, 2027 for Region and April 17th, 2027 for State.

One of our favorite Alta Theatre traditions is our yearly Student Directed One-Acts, also called SDOAs. These are ten-minute mini-shows chosen in March by those who are directing. Our student directors are from our Theatre IV class and are chosen through an application process and announced the beginning of Spring Break.
AUDITIONS: April 19th, 2027
*You will need a one-minute modern Monologue for auditions.

COME ENJOY OUR INCREDIBLE SEASON NEXT YEAR!

**Other ways to be involved are Drama Club and Improv Club (both monthly) and dates will be released on here and our Social Media (Instagram) the beginning of August.

Shows:

John Proctor is the Villain (September 16 or 23)

Little Shop of Horrors (October 28th)

The last show is TBA and will be announced September 1st… we will attend (May 5 or 12)

I am VERY excited about everything in the season!  I encourage you and parents to read over content warnings before making your decision as some shows have mature themes and strong language. After each show, we will watch a short 15-25 minutes talk back with the cast where they will answer questions about the show, the creation process, and take a few questions from the audience; you!

Each field trip day we will leave at 1pm sharp and return to school between 5:30-6:15pm.  You will be required to dress nicely – no jeans or T-Shirts, and you must be enrolled in at least one theatre class for the coming school year to attend. This is a great chance to see some professional work with friends in our local area for a reasonable price (a HUGE discount) and see students from other High School’s interested in the same work. Please fill out the form below if interested and I will begin the process of getting tickets and the package solidified. There will be SOME tickets and packages sold at the start of next year if you need time before buying one, but only a handful will be available then and It is first come, first served.

Shakespeare IE Auditions 2026!

Hello all!

Shakespeare IE (Individual Event) auditions for next year's team are approaching in the next few weeks! These will be held on May 19th in the Little Theatre. Packets are now available and on the callboard in the Little Theatre as is the audition sign-up sheet. It is just inside the East Side doors.

Please read through the packet carefully for important information.  A couple key items are below:

1. Fill out and bring pages 5 and 9 of the packet with you to auditions, as well as your grades from spring semester.

2. Please prepare a one minute Shakespeare monologue or a two minute Shakespeare scene with 1-2 partners.  I encourage you to find your own piece that you are excited to work on, but there are two monologue options that you are welcome to use for your audition piece on the last pages of the audition packet.  Additionally, I prefer to see a memorized audition, BUT, if you need to use your script (especially if this is your first time working with Shakespeare text) then that is okay!  Ultimately, I want you to have a fun, successful audition and that you feel proud of yourself.

3. For those cast with an IE piece, there will be a mandatory meeting from 2:45 - 3:45 pm in the Little Theatre on May 20th (the day after auditions).

You can access a digital copy of the audition packet HERE.  If you have questions, feel free to email me (linze.struiksma@canyonsdistrict.org) or stop by the Little Theatre after school.

I'm so excited for Shakespeare Competition and hope to see you at auditions!

**Ensemble scene auditions will be held at the beginning of the next school year and more info can be found here the first week of August.

A huge thank you to all who applied for Theatre Council for the 2026-2027! There were so many great ideas and applications submitted, and you made this an extremely hard decision. I ask that all members of the Alta Theatre Family support their peers in our decision.  If you did not make it onto council this time, please know you are still amazing and a lot of great candidates applied.  If you would like more direct feedback on what to work on in the future, please feel free to email Struiks or Cline next week, starting Monday.

Listed below is the Theatre Council list for the 2026-2027 school year:

Vice President: Izzy Ragonese

Secretary: Emiline Johnson

Historian: Jett Smith

Publicity: Mya Didericksen

Financial Chair: Ario Baghai

Improv Captain: Addi Covington

Congrats to our new theatre council! For all new AND old council members, there will be a banquet planning meeting Friday, May 1st from 2:30-3:30pm in the Little Theatre! This will directly follow the Drama Club Activity.  Additionally, all NEW council members (and returning) need to be in the Little Theatre for ADVISORY TOMORROW at 9:10am to be measured for sweaters so we can get those sent off to assure a return date in August. If you are a returning member, BRING YOUR SWEATER TOMORROW! I will have Hallee Wasden reach out and make a group chat for the new council members to send reminders.  We will have one other meeting before school gets out this year, so when she messages, please promptly respond. High School Musical Theatre Awards Tickets - May 9, 2026!

Hey all!

The Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards is fast approaching and we have been nominated in all the categories listed in the picture below:

That's so exciting!  We have a handful attending that evening to accept the awards should we win and Taylor will be performing in some group medley's for Best Actor in the STATE! Thankfully Alta has a block of free tickets available to students who were involved in Hadestown - either acting or tech!

The awards show is formal - so a great excuse to get dressed up! - and is held at the Eccles Theatre in downtown Salt Lake.  This awards show will be on May 9th at 7 pm.  If you want to attend, you'll need to coordinate your own ride because we will not be taking a bus.

I'd love for as many people to attend as possible - obviously to support Taylor and our other finalists, and also to see some awesome performances at an incredible theatre!

If you are going to attend (and I hope you do!) please sign up on the Google Sheet linked HERE.  We have a total of 28 tickets available, so they are reserved on a first come, first serve basis.  If you are going to attend with one of our free tickets, you MUST sign up on this sheet by 3pm on Monday, 5/4.

Acceptors - you are already signed up! Please just be aware you may want to coordinate as you have a meeting in the Eccles from 4-4:30pm so you need to meet me there by 3:45pm in the Eccles Theatre. We will meet you after the meeting to grab dinner before the show.

For those that do sign up, keep an eye out the week before for more information about coordinating plans to meet beforehand, eat, and pick up tickets. :)

Thanks!

Pioneer Field Trip - Come From Away (May 6th)

Hey Team -

We have the next of the pioneer field trips coming up on May 6th to see the musical Come From Away. This is my FAVORITE musical!  There is a content warning for strong language and mature themes. Please look up a synopsis to be sure you would like to attend. We will leave at 1pm sharp and return between 5:30-6pm pending traffic.

Those who have already purchased group package tickets from last year get first dibs. We need to be on top of permission forms, so they will be due by Monday 27th by 2:45pm. If you have the package and are not planning to go, please let me know ASAP - by April 24th would be helpful. The sooner the better for me to know! CHECK AP TESTING SCHEDULE - I have these two tests listed at the same time, so if that's you you'll have to miss this one: Comparative Government and Politics Physics 1: Algebra-Based.

If you ARE going, please get this permission slip signed and returned by the 27th. You can print the one link below and sign it OR come get a hard copy from me next week. I will have hard copies available on the 20th (after state). If you are someone who did NOT pre-purchase a package last year, extra tickets will go on sale in the office after the 27th.  You must email me THEN and claim a spot! Please do not email me until April 27th.  You will need to pay $10 in the office and turn in the receipt WITH the permission form to finalize your spot.

Thanks!

 - Struiks

P.S. If parents are interested in attending as a chaperone they need to EMAIL me asap- I will only have a couple spots for this one as some chaperones are already filled.

Student-Directed One-Acts (SDOAs) 2026 Info and Audition Packets!

 Hey all!

SDOA auditions are coming up on April 20th and we are excited to have you all come and get involved! This is an opportunity for the younger class (freshman-juniors) to audition for the 10-minute, senior-directed shows and have an incredible bonding and acting experience in just three weeks. Our seniors have applied and been chosen as your directors with some awesome, fun shows and ideas. Below is a list of shows and directors for you to look over as you choose and prepare your monologues.

Remember you will be considered for ALL shows unless otherwise marked in your audition packet and then assigned to the one you are cast in by the directors. Check out the descriptions below and links to the packet.  Hard copies of the packet are already in the Little Theatre on the call-board as is the signup for an audition time slot!

Directors: Kaylee Cannon and Taylor Fairbourn

SHOW: Pareidolia

4 college students gather around a park bench and have a petty argument about shapes in the clouds. Although the conversation begins harmless, it soon spirals into deeper debates about perception, perspective, and personal values. The play causes us to ask the question: Are we aware of our own flaws and patterns?

Directors: Alyssa Read and Niv Raz

SHOW: Loyalties

Two couples, Rudy and Monika, and Jacob and Katrin, are having a celebratory birthday dinner for Monika, and things start to get tense as we slowly see that Rudy and Monika directly support the Nazi party and Jacob and Katrin are against it. They have an argument about what it means to be patriotic and what the difference is between that and blindly following a country's actions.

Directors: Braden Mark and Molly Smart

SHOW: Mom's Kitchen

A restaurant where they treat you like they’re your mother! The only problem is that Bill is not the biggest fan of his mother, and his date, Betty, is not impressed. Will ‘Mom’ be able to rein him in or will the whole date end in disaster?

Director: Layna Johnson

SHOW: Totally Basic Defenders

Totally basic defenders is a comedic show about a group of underwhelming superhero’s who take themselves way too seriously. When a ridiculous villain professor Zapbolts threatens the world with a “rabies ray” (which is actually just a hairdryer), the team must step up to stop him. Despite their barely useful powers, they somehow managed to save the day through teamwork, luck, and a lot of awkward effort.

Directors: Cara Barnes and Leah Memmott

SHOW: Sorry, Wrong Number

One lonely evening, Mrs. Agnes Stevenson attempts to call her loving husband Elbert to see when he’ll be home. However, the operator connects her incorrectly, and she overhears a murder plot for that very night. Will she find help before it’s too late?

Directors: Chloe Hinman and Madison Jones

SHOW: The Will

A historical comedy about a family who reads their will of their father after his death. However, there’s a catch - they get to decide who the inheritance goes to and along with that who has to take care of the mother.

Region Dinner: Parent Help Needed!

I am in need of 4-5 parents willing to help sell pizza slices, chips, candy and soda on the evening of Region Theatre at Alta High School - March 19th. We typically sell everything for $1 and it's really easy and a great way to support the students as they compete. I will pre-order pizza and have already obtained snacks, treats, and drinks so it would mean setting out the goodies and someone picking up the pizzas from Costco and then bringing them to Alta as Cline and I (Struiks) will be running/hosting the competition. Then, you would stay through dinner time 5:30-7:15pm to sell the food to all schools.

If you are willing to sell or pick up pizzas please email me ASAP and a sincere and advanced Thank You! Afterward you would be free to leave or stay and watch the awards ceremony with our team. Please reach out if you can help!
