Utah State Les Miserables Auditions and Internship Opportunities! DUE ASAP!

 TWO EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENTS!

These are directly from Vanessa with the HS Musical Theatre Awards

  • I have had many requests regarding our 2022 UHSMTA Internships and I am excited to finally share with you a brand-new opportunity.

This year UFOMT would like to produce a production of Les Misérables cast entirely of students from the Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards.  This production would perform at the end of our regular season in August in Logan, Utah.  Virtual rehearsals will happen prior to August. We thought this opportunity would accomplish our goal of bringing talented students from across the state to create art together, work with professionals and elevate each other in the process.

We need your help!!!  As I don’t have contact information for your students we are dependent upon the teachers to distribute this information to the students.  Attached is the paperwork students need to submit their audition package.  Audition packets (including video submissions) are due December 30, 2021.  This is for ALL students who were an acting part in the musical this year.

(There will also be opportunities for technical theatre students to participate in this project.  Those details will be forthcoming.)

I imagine there will be a myriad of questions from your students, you are welcome to send them my way.  If you have questions, reach out to vanessa@ufomt.org and she can answer them.

  • For the last few years we have been delighted to partner with CS Music to provide additional training opportunities for UHSMTA students. CS Music would like to extend the Utah Rising Singer Scholarship opportunity to your students and the deadline for submission for this scholarship is coming up on December 20, 2021.  Details are attached in links below.

The detail sheets can be found here at the link below in this google file - again, contact VANESSA with any questions.

Spring Show 2022 Announcement!

Our Spring Show Announcement is here - I encourage you to read the script and become familiar with the area/time period/and dialects of the piece before auditions on December 15th.  Here we go...

We are thrilled to announce that our spring show is…The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry!  This show takes place in December 1939 and follows the Freitag family – an upper-class Jewish family in Atlanta – as they prepare for Ballyhoo, a cotillion-esque ball that is the social event of season.  In the midst of their preparations, they meet Joe Farkas.  Joe is from Brooklyn and is of Eastern European Jewish descent.  In getting to know Joe, the Freitags (especially Sunny) wrestle with understanding and identifying Jewish discrimination from both within, and outside of, the Jewish community.

Alfred Uhry also wrote the play Driving Miss Daisy and the libretto for the musical Parade.  The Last Night of Ballyhoo won the 1997 Tony Award for “Best Play.”

This play is largely a comedy, but does have some wonderful dramatic moments.  It is an ensemble piece comprised of gloriously wacky, over-the-top characters.

A note on dialects and auditions:  In choosing your audition monologue, the first priority is choosing a piece that fits the show and having it performance ready for auditions.  If you want to use a dialect with your audition you are welcome to, but it is not required.  We will be asking for Atlanta and Brooklyn dialects in call backs.  Please note - the Atlanta dialect is different from Texas or mountain southern, and the Brooklyn dialect is different from the Long Island dialect we often associate with New Yorkers.  All of that to say – be thorough and specific in your dialect research!

Look for more information in the next couple weeks!

Pre-Tech Week Announcements! (Live tickets, time changes, etc.)

Pre-Tech Week is upon us and so are the late hours and wonderful memories to be made!  Thank you for the amazing efforts from all of the cast and crew on Saturday - we got SO much accomplished and I really am starting to see the show come together beautifully.

With this week a few reminders:

1 - Student, do homework in your downtime and stay on top of school assignments.  Do them in down time and advisory so you can get rest and sleep when you get home each night.  This week times are listed as TBD - this will likely be around 8:30-9pm.  [Parents: I will NEVER keep you kids past nine.  If they are getting home way later, this is NOT because of rehearsal.] Be prepared, but getting rest when you are home.  Also, drink lots of water and don't just eat halloween candy... :)

2 - Parents, we NEED your help to make dinner nights work for your students.  Remember I do this so the kids can bond and spend time together, it ends up being cheaper to split up meals, and then kids aren't rushing in their 45 minutes for dinner to drive and eat.  We can ONLY make these dinners work if everyone pitches in and helps.  If you need to submit receipts, you can - I just physically don't have the time to get/make food.  I really do value and appreciate all of the help you give and the students really love that time together to chat and just be together.

3 - Tickets go on sale tomorrow on ShoVation.com!  I am SOOOOO excited to announce that ALL tickets are on sale tomorrow.  Gala tickets can still be purchased until the 14th, so if you decide later to go or have a neighbor/friend who wants to join, we would LOVE to pack the Gala so all the students have family and/or friends there. Plus, you get to interact with your actors in character... which is pretty awesome.  Regardless, get on and purchase tickets for all nights tomorrow!  Remember the 18th is a special treat in that it's our understudy night.  Come then and another night and it's like seeing two whole new shows! Oh, and if you're willing to hang up a poster or two at work, have your student grab some as we have some extras and want to advertise.

4 - Start bringing makeup, hair stuff, and ALL costume pieces every day now -this includes all shoes needed.  You CAN store them at school and I will lock the makeup room and dressing rooms.

5 - If anyone has a power-washer (for an old fridge), power inflater (for a zillion balls/big balloons) we would REALLY love to borrow them for a day or two.... anyone?  Let me know!

6 - Lastly and VERY important... The company who is hired to take off the pit top so we can actually use the orchestra pit can only do this on November 6th and it takes ALL day.  That said, I would like to get some dance cleaning in AND a full run on Friday as we will need to NOT have rehearsal on November 6th.  This will ONLY work if we can come in few hours earlier on the 5th.  What makes this perfect is that it is a remote learning day and we can fill in some time then.  I'll trade you 6 hours on Saturday for 2 extra hours on Friday.  Please plan on Friday, November 5th to be there by 12:30pm and then stay till our normal evening time.  This schedule change is not only necessary, but congrats, you get this next Saturday off and are free to rest and recoop before final tech week and the show!

STUDENTS - please tell your parents to read through this whole things.

PARENTS - please tell your kiddos to read through this whole thing. :)

Y'all are amazing - super stoked to share the BEST NIGHT EVER with you and the cast soon!!!

Spongebob the Musical Updates (October 23rd) - Mandatory Read!

 Hey all!

Here's a few reminders:

1 - Please practice dances and songs - as I said at rehearsal, if you give 100% in knowing your parts I can get us there in these next three weeks.  Let's do this!

2 - Remember you need your other clothing items for costumes and makeup by the 30th - get shopping ASAP if you haven't already.  That is ONE WEEK from today!

3 - Next grade checks are due on THIS TUESDAY October 26th (PRINTED and brought with you). Please write your FULL name at the top of the page before you turn them in.

4 - This Monday is the only day full cast isn't called - that means the Angel's Hands Crew should be coming in to work on tech things.  Please make an effort to make that a priority if not called AND help in your downtime over this week.  We have a TON to get done and starting Monday I will have a running list of things to accomplish on the board. Thanks for all the help you can give!

5 - Memorize! For those required to memorize lines, those need to be even more solid.  You are the examples, so step it up if you haven't already.  THREE WEEKS. I understand calling line here or there, but we really do need to be solid on spoken lines and lyrics in songs to make the show work.  If you need help, have a parent or friend run lines with you and make it fun! By tech weeks you should just be enjoying the experience and having fun as an actor. :)

6 - Another huge THANK YOU for the kindness I am seeing.... so many of you are reaching out to the person sitting on the side or inviting someone to chat.  So many of you are complimenting each other or cheering after each dance... I am beyond impressed and THAT is the best thing you can learn from this show - KINDNESS is King.

7 - Please remind parents to be checking emails.  Sign-ups for tech week dinners and concessions have gone out and parents need to sign up to help on at least one night for dinners and to bring one thing for concessions.  Parents, I could NOT do this without you - thank you for the support and aide in the crazy weeks going forward.  Here's to creating an incredible show and experience for the cast, crew, and audience!

8 - Lastly, GALA TICKETS GO ON SALE MONDAY!  I have invites for you all to hand out to parents, neighbors, and friends you really want to invite to attend. The Opening Night Gala (Nov 16th only) is a chance for actors to mingle before the big show, the guests get fun treats, there's a little performance, and if you buy a Gala ticket, you get to choose your seat ticket ahead of others IF purchased this week.  Please come support and come to the Gala!  All other tickets go on sale November 1st at 12:01am (is what I was told). PASSWORD is AltaTheatre

Musical Updates (Mandatory Read!)

 Hey all!

Here's a few things to be mindful of over the break:

1 - Please practice dances and songs; we will check off parts on Tuesday and Friday and I need to know y'all are solid moving forward.  Solid doesn't mean perfect - it means you know it and are working hard - it WAS clear yesterday who had practiced and who had not since we learned the dances/songs.  Please make this a priority at least two days over break for a little while to ensure we are solid moving forward.  33 days!

2 - Those in the tap number you NEED to have your shoes ASAP for this to work.  Please work to get them here this NEXT WEEK so we can clean the dance if you don't already have them.  If needed you can buy some shoes in that sytle and order taps to attach - I just know tap shoes are easier.  Here's a link if you haven't ordered them yet, but I'm hoping you have....

https://www.amazon.com/Linodes-Leather-Dance-Shoes-Shoes-Black-5-5M/dp/B08395Z46Q/ref=sr_1_13?dchild=1&keywords=tap%2Bshoes&qid=1634184267&sr=8-13&th=1&psc=1

If you need help, reach out.

3 - Remember you need your other clothing items and makeup by the 30th, but this weekend with down time may be a good time to go shopping. :)

4 - Irey sent out a signup for T-shirt sizes today.  Please get on and fill that out with your name and size so we get you the correct one.  I would like to order shirts next Monday night, so take time to do that this weekend.

5 - Next grade checks are due on October 26th (PRINTED and brought with you).  Please do what you need to do to be solid on grades at the end of quarter - that determines if you continue with the musical or I have to ask you to step out and focus on academics.  That will be a painful conversation, so those of you behind, grades are you NUMBER ONE priority over this weekend.  Well, all of you - academics are number one, so be sure and get those grades up! :)

6 - Memorize! For those required to memorize lines, those are to be SOLID by Tuesday.  I understand calling line here or there, but we really do need to be fairly solid on spoken lines and lyrics in songs this next week to make the show work.  If you need help, have a parent or friend run lines with you and make it fun!  I want you to be successful so take time to practice over break with lines.

7 - THANK YOU.  Thank you for all of the hard work you're putting in and effort in rehearsals.  I know we push you, but you rise to the occasion again and again and I feel so thankful to have each of you on the "team." I really do have the best job... keep up the good work, push yourself, and know it's all for a good cause and amazing result in the end.  I am PROUD of you!  Also, THANK YOU for the kindness I am seeing.... so many of you are reaching out to the person sitting on the side or inviting someone to chat.  So many of you are complimenting each other or cheering after each dance... I am beyond impressed and THAT is the best thing you can learn from this show - KINDNESS is King.  SO PROUD!

8 - Last, enjoy the break!  Take time for you!  I am going to sign off from my email and the blog, etc. until Sunday because I need some mental health and me time - I'll check in at that time, but before that, please be understanding and patient with my responses.  Take care of yourself, stay hydrated, have some fun, and get some sleep. Love y'all appropriately! :)

Alta and DAC joint show announcement!

 Hey all!

Today they announced the Broadway Revue auditions with Draper Arts Council - this is an in tandem show with Alta where at least a 1/3 to a 1/2 of the show will be Alta students.  Additionally, you'll get to work with Becca Tozavaras from last year if you are cast.  I am not in charge of casting just bridging the gap so students can get another credit on their name and resume and have another performance opportunity.

Auditions are coming up in two weeks, but the show will not be until January.  It's minimal rehearsals as it's a revue, so you CAN do this and be a part of all of the other things we have planned at Alta (musical, spring show, murder mystery, region team).  I worked it out so rehearsals will be after those things and mostly IN January.  Here is the link to more info and a way to sign up.  I would love to see everyone audition, especially as it IS an Alta show, just in tandem with another Performing Arts Council.

Here's the link - get those songs ready:

Spongebob Cast Supply Needs - What to donate for set and what to buy for makeup/costuming!

Below are the thing you will need to pick up to wear under or with your costumes.  I have attached OPTIONS, but you can find your own in a very similar or the same style.  I just looked for well-priced options.  Read through the WHOLE post as multiple parts may apply to you and you will need all the items for YOUR characters!

Please have all costume pieces and shoes by October 30th!

Women in Skirts, Bikini Bottom Boogie people, and Electric Skates – You need to purchase tights in a color that looks good with your outfit. Please be sure they are thick enough to not rip and hold up through the run. I would get two pairs just in case you want to wash them between days. If you do, please get them in the same color.

Tights

Bikini Bottom Citizens (whole cast) you will need to purchase a NUDE-COLORED camisole/tank-top leotard. If you are more comfortable, you can purchase NUDE-COLORED compression tank-top or camisole and NUDE-COLORED compression shorts in leu of a leotard. I would also grab loose shorts to wear over your compression pants/leotard when not in costume.  This will keep modesty in changing and sweat from coming through your costume.

Tan Leotard

All Bikini Bottom Citizens - You will also need to get TAN OR BLACK jazz shoes to wear throughout the show.  A few scenes have specific shoes, but on other scenes, we want you in jazz shoes to dance with safety.  Here are some options of ones to get:

Jazz Shoes

Sea Anemones - You need to get black tap shoes that will work for you and we CAN buy these back at the end if you have an itemized receipt and they're in good quality (not perfect) condition.  Up to you if you want to keep them or get reimbursed!  You will also need to get black NOT see-through leggings/tighter pants, a black shirt, and black socks/tights to wear under your costume.

Simple Sponge Dancers and BFF Dancers- You need a long sleeve black shirt, long black pants, black socks, and dark shoes.

If anyone has pirate looking gear or costumes you're willing to lend, we would GREATLY appreciate it!  We also need two Pirates Baseballl Jerseys if anyone has them?!

Makeup-wise all need to have foundation and powder that match your face, eye liner (black or brown), and blush or contour. Ladies you need mascara as well, and boys it’s an option for you. You will need makeup by October 30th!  I did NOT provide links for makeup because it's going to store and matching it to your skin.  Ask for help if you need it!

For this show everyone has normal stage makeup - heavier than normal makeup in everyday life. I think it would be fun to add your own color highlights, eyeshadow, and sparkles that are specialized to YOUR character.... I will be having you bring your makeup on October 30th and doing your makeup design so it can be checked off, so have the fun colors and ideas ready by then.  Those who are gone that day will need to take time on your OWN to complete your makeup, take a few pictures and submit them BY the 30th for check-off.

I do have some makeup sparkles to add to people, but if you want specific things, you can get those. If you don't know HOW to do basic stage makeup watch THIS video and practice before the 30th!!!

Basic Stage Makeup Video

We will talk hair later and you won't need much on your own for this... I think that's it!  Excited to see everything come together on the 30th!

LASTLY, we are still looking for some old buckets 2 more water barrels if anyone has some.  Thanks!

Shakespeare Packet - New Cost Addendum Info

 Hey all!

Here is a link to the FULL packet with most of the paperwork for the trip to review before signing on to the trip.  The only thing missing is the medical form to be notarized as this will be handed out after casting at the mandatory Parent Meeting on September 8th @6pm.  There IS a change from the printed one - the cost of the trip has always been $357.00, but originally we were not going to collect the $50 food money.  Legally we have found we need to do that and then will hand an envelope with that $50 for food to your student as we leave on the trip.  They WILL have to sign for the amount to ensure THEY receive the full amount.  That is the only change and it IS reflected on THIS upload of paperwork.

Please email with further questions to the email in the packet.  Thanks and break legs in a week at auditions!

Sidenote:  This has been a question - students not on Shakespeare Team CAN go on the trip if there are spots left on the bus/in rooms. They must also be enrolled in a theatre class, pay the fees, complete the forms, and agree to behave in a manner that represents Alta Theatre Department.  We invite those unable to do team to still come explore and celebrate the work of Shakespeare!

Stage Tech Bench Fundraiser!

We are selling some amazingly cute and well-designed benches that our 2021 technicians made at the end of the school year for their stage tech final grades. We have a light blue, cream, and stained simple park-bench, a teal shoe bench, and a stain armed-chair bench. The last picture is the arm-chair bench design in teal that has now been bought and places in my mother’s backyard.

Lumber is pricey and we’re doing this as a fundraiser, so we would like to sell for $150 each or best offer. These benches are ready to go, fully sanded and painted, as of now and finished with an outdoor protective coating! Support Alta Theatre by purchasing one today- just me an email telling me which one you would love to have and we can set up a pick up time! 🎭❤️ ( linze.struiksma@canyonsdistrict.org )

Shakespeare 2021 Details!

Hey all!

I have a note from this year’s Shakespeare coach, and we wanna help you get ready for your first audition! We are only about two weeks out from the start of school and a little over three weeks till audition, so here we go with a little note from Noah:

“It’s Shakespeare time! I am excited for the opportunity to work with the y'all :) My name is Noah and this will be my third year coaching with Alta.

Why get involved with Shakespeare?? So many reasons!! I may be a bit bias, but I believe that being a part of the Shakespeare Team will help you grow as an actor more than virtually anything else you can do.  Plus, you get to be part of an incredible team and go on one of the greatest trips of all year! No matter what grade you are, I would encourage each and everyone of you to seriously consider being involved. ALL ages and students are welcome- even if you have yet to take a theatre class.  It was definitely a highlight of my Highschool experience (yes, I am an Alta Alumni. Go Hawks!) It has been even more incredible to be on the coaching side and to work with talented student like you! So, come audition!

This year, we have a very unique script picked for our ensemble scene. As rebellion breaks out across the whole of England, a young character named Holland tries to seeks honor to expunge the dishonor they currently feel for not fighting with Henry the 5th years ago. Along the way, they go through a transformative journey as they join with the rebellious rabble lead by one of the most chaotic characters in all of Shakespeare's works -- Jack Cade. As Jack slowly (or not so slowly) descends into a power hungry anarchy, Holland goes on a hero's journey to discover what they are truly true to. 'Follow your spirit, All things be ready if our minds be so!'

To get started, look for a monologue that you really feel you can get behind. You can find a good list of monologues at  https://www.bard.org/competition under the Shakespeare Scene Resources section or at https://www.shakespeare-monologues.org/home. I look forward to seeing you on the 24th!”

More information about auditions will be posted on the call-board outside of the green room in the PAC the first day of school, including packets to go over with your parents. All who are on team get to perform in Night of Shakespeare on September 29th and attend/fund the trip to Cedar City for competition Sept. 30-October 2nd. Rehearsals will be most days after school at 5pm-7pm starting August 25th, with times beginning earlier closer to competition. We are excited to see what y’all prepare for us and are stoked to get the show on its feet! 🎭
-Struiks

Cost for the trip will be $357 total!
