Arsenic and Old Lace Homework Assignments

All homework assignments should be completed by the first rehearsal. Good luck!

Abby and Martha:  Target age (between 60-70)  watch people this age (in real life or on screen) and notice how they move, how they talk, mannerisms and gestures they use, etc. Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal. Come up with your own physicality for your character.

Mortimer:  Go online and read at least 3 reviews on a theatre production.  Watch a movie and write a review on it.  Bring the review with you to the first rehearsal.

Elaine: Watch one of the following: The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, or The Shop Around the Corner. Take special note of the female lead.  How does she move?  What kind of mannerisms does she have?  What kind of gestures does she use? Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal.  Come up with a physicality for your character.

Teddy: Research Teddy Roosevelt.  Document major events in his life.  Watch clips of him.  Why would Teddy want to be Teddy Roosevelt?  Bring your findings with you to the first rehearsal.

Dr. Reverend Harper: Do research on the duties of ministers.  What are their responsibilities? What do they have authority to do?  Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal.

Jonathan: Watch the original Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff as the monster. Cultivate your inner “creeper.”

Dr. Einstein: Research the process of doing plastic surgery.  How does it work?  Are there different methods?  What kind of method would have been used back in the 1940s? Also research what happens to people when they get drunk.  How do they behave?  Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal.

Mr. Gibbs: Target age 50-60.  Grumpy.  Watch people this age (in real life or on screen).  How do they move?  How do they behave?  Why might Mr. Gibbs be grumpy and lonely? Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal. Come up with a physicality for your character.

Klein, Brophy, O’Hara:  Research police duties.  Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal.

Rooney, Witherspoon:  Target age 45-60.  Watch people this age (in real life or on screen).  How do they move?  What mannerisms and gestures do they have?  Document your findings and bring them to the first rehearsal.  Start working on a physicality for your character.  

All homework assignments will be give to the Dramaturg
