"The Foreigner" Auditions Packet, Sign-up, AD Application

The time has come for yet another wonderful show audition!  I am excited to see all of your hard-work and dedication pay off on December 14th at auditions.  There is a previous article on here about the show, themes, and characters, so please see that if there are questions.  Another thing I would encourage is reading the show BEFORE auditions - there is a PDF here: https://usm.maine.edu/sites/default/files/theatre/The%20Foreigner%20script.pdf

Below is a link to the audition packet with ALL information about auditions and the calendar for tentative rehearsals.  You will need a one-minute monologue for auditions, and though a southern accent is not mandatory for auditions, it will be for callbacks - so take a swing at it with your audition if you can! You can also find a hard copy of the packet on the board outside the PAC Green Room.  Here is the packet link:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Azp4swSZ7Ng-souiNloL6PWBJA8aU3xaUb_m25kG-AI/edit?usp=sharing

PLEASE ATTACH YOUR GRADES PRINT-OUT TO YOUR AUDITION FORM!

Please sign up here for an audition time and be there 10 minutes prior to your audition:

If you are interested in being an assistant director, the application link is below.  You can also find a hard copy of the application on the board outside the PAC Green Room. I have loved my experiences with assistant directors and look forward to reading your applications - you can STILL audition even if applying and be considered for cast first.  AD Applications are open for sophomores and up! 2023 Spring Show Announcement: The Foreigner (by Larry Shue)

When I was in my junior year of university (this is Struiks speaking) I had the opportunity to see Larry Shue's "The Foreigner" performed at my Alma Mater.  I was pleasantly surprised with how engaging it was and the quality of writing/wit. I laughed and laughed with the characters, but also got to go on a journey with them to learn about friendship, kindness, and true-acceptance. I was moved by the piece and left the theatre vowing that one day, I would direct the show. That day has finally arrived and I could not be more pleased.

This heartwarming tale shows characters learning about one another, fighting for what's right, and defining new friendships all while creating masterfully crafted hilarity on-stage.  Additionally, this script delves into the topic of racism and overall acceptance in a manner that allows us to understand how ridiculous prejudice can be. It's a passion piece for me as a director and actress, and I am excited to cast, stage, and perform this piece with Alta HS Theatre.

Open auditions for this show will take place on December 14th with invited callbacks on the 15th.  You will need a one-minute monologue to audition and should be prepared, if invited to callbacks, to perform in the dialects appropriate to each character - mainly focusing on southern dialects.  Look for auditions packets and sign-ups online and on the call-board outside the PAC Green Room by December 1st. For now, there is show and character information below.  My suggestion?  Read the play and become familiar with the characters/story if you plan to audition - it's worth every minute.  Break legs!

Synopsis: The Foreigner

In a rural fishing lodge in Georgia, Froggy LeSueur, a British demolitions expert who sometimes runs training sessions at a nearby military installation, is trying to put his friend, Charlie Baker at ease. Charlie, a proofreader whose wife finds him boring, has come along for a much needed getaway. The problem is he is pathologically shy and is terrified at the prospect of having to converse with strangers at the lodge for three days.

Froggy must leave to tend to his military responsibilities, so, in an attempt to help his shy friend, he tells Betty, the owner of the lodge, that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and neither speaks nor under- stands English.

Thus, conversations at the lodge carry on around Charlie much as if he weren’t there at all, since it is assumed he can’t understand them anyway. For example, Catherine Simms informs her fiancé, the reverend David Marshall Lee, that he isn’t as sterile as he said he was and that she’s pregnant.

Owen Musser, county property inspector who has been threatening to condemn the lodge, wants a pri- vate conversation with the Reverend David. In the process, Charlie overhears a plot to undermine the value of the lodge through condemnation so that David can buy it at a bargain price. In addition, Ellard Simms, Catherine’s slow-witted brother, appears on the scene, and it becomes apparent that David is trying to make him appear to be an idiot so that he can’t inherit his half of the family money.

Through little effort on his part, Charlie endears himself to almost everyone by being a good listener (much better than they know) as they relate their problems to him. He doesn’t judge, nor does he give advice. So, Ellard tries his hand at teaching Charlie to speak English. Maybe poor Ellard isn’t so stupid after all, as Charlie makes him seem to be a natural teacher.

David and Owen soon appear with a box of ledgers, records and even dynamite, apparently salvaged from a fire of some sort. Owen’s van contains weapons and uniforms enough to reunite the “Georgia Empire.”

Froggy returns and is surprised at how well his shy friend is doing. Charlie entertains by relating a story in a strange, unintelligible dialect. Froggy agrees to return the next day, and, in private, Charlie reveals that he is having a wonderful time and may even be acquiring a personality.

At Owen's return Charlie has some fun tormenting him. David shows up with his new van, and Charlie demonstrates how well Ellard has taught him in just two days. Catherine agrees that Ellard is indeed smart enough to receive his part of the inheritance, much to the dismay of David, who decides a hasty marriage to Catherine might be in his best interest after all.

Charlie agrees to teach a bit of his “native tongue,” and has a good deal of fun at Owen and David’s expense. Owen, unable to stand any further torment, rages that the Klan will soon be coming to purge the land of foreigners. As Act One concludes, the power has been cut off and the lodge is in virtual isolation and darkness as everyone turns to Charlie for a solution.

As promised, Klan members appear, torches blazing. Through a series of tricks involving Ellard, a secret wall and a croquet mallet, the Klan is vanquished and David is exposed for what he really is.

Froggy returns, ready for the “vacation” and Charlie’s masquerade to end. By mutual agreement, Charlie decides to stay on with his friends at the lodge as “The Foreigner” in order to teach and be taught.

Characters: The Foreigner

Froggy Lesueur: A British military demolitions expert who occasionally conducts field operations in rural Georgia, Froggy is Charlie’s caring friend and devises the scheme that protects Charlie from having to interact with the other guests at the lodge.

Charlie Baker: A science-fiction copy editor for a book publishing house, Charlie is in his late forties, British, and is a pathologically shy little man who has a very unfaithful wife, no personality that he can think of, and a need for peace and quiet. He has accompanied his friend, Froggy to a Georgia fishing lodge much against his own better judgment.

Betty Meeks: The proprietor of a Georgia fishing lodge, Betty is past seventy, a widow, and a long- time friend of Froggy. She is pleasant, wise in some ways, naïve in others. She is a good-hearted, generous, “down-home” Southerner who speaks the hardy local dialect.

Reverend David Marshall Lee: Neither the stereotypical pallid young divinity student nor the hearty backslapping evangelist, he appears to be a regular guy, one that you would like to have on your side. He is not what he seems, however, and he is clearly the brains behind the plot he engages in with Owen Musser to get control of Betty Meeks’s fishing lodge and Catherine Simms’s fortune.

Catherine Simms: The very pregnant and potentially rich fiancée of the Reverend Lee, she can be a formidable force and occasionally almost too much for the good reverend to handle. She has a ready wit and a sharp tongue. She badly needs someone to talk to, and, since Charlie doesn’t bother giving advice, he suits her needs perfectly. Catherine is Ellard’s sister.

Owen Musser: The Tilghman County property inspector, Owen is a two-tattoo man: one of them, he may have gotten while drunk or on a dare; two of them means he went back for more. Beware of a two-tattoo man. Owen and the Reverend Lee are cooking up a plot to condemn Betty’s lodge so that it can be bought for their own nefarious purposes. Owen, we find, is the absolute stereotype of an ill-bred southern Klansman.

Ellard Simms: Catherine’s brother, Ellard is an agreeable young man who is a bit slow-witted. He works as a sort of handyman for Betty and needs a considerable bit of instruction in his tasks, but may not be as dull as he seems. He is due to inherit a share of the Simms family fortune, unless the Reverend Lee can convince Catherine that Ellard is too stupid to manage money, or anything else, on his own. Ellard befriends Charlie and even decides to teach him to speak English.

Various Townspeople: Edith Eliot, Amy Fassberg, Leah Hocking, Bryan Johnson, Andy Mellon, Steve Peck, Theresa Plikaitis, Robert Wells.

Tomorrow's Rehearsal - Addams Family

 Hi everyone,

Tomorrow we will work the Tango from 3:50-5 pm and Moon and Me from 5-6 pm.  Morticia and Gomez will also be called from 5-6 to work on Live Before We Die.

Also, please let your parents/guardians/family members know that if any of them are able, we NEED more help on Saturday to lift and set in place the second story platform.  If they're able to be at the PAC on Saturday morning, it would be so, so helpful and would help ensure everyone's safety and success!

Thank you all and see you tomorrow/Thursday!

10/24 - Taking actor headshots - We will take these at the very beginning of rehearsal at 2:45.  You should plan to come to school in the hair and make-up that you want for headshots, or do you hair or make-up between 2:25-2:45.  Attendance will be taken right at 2:45.  Regarding shirts/tops for your headshot: dark, bold (preferably solid) colors work really well!  Try to avoid anything too busy or plain white.

10/29 - Bring your make-up and be prepared to show me your character hair and make-up.  You should practice your hair and make-up AT LEAST twice before 10/29.  You will have no more than 30 minutes to get ready so you'll need to already have planned and practiced what you're doing.  You can also come to Saturday's rehearsal with you hair and make-up fully or partially done if that's helpful! Ruby and Kassie created awesome slides that have information about what your make-up should look like for the show as well as basic stage make-up tutorials.  EVERYONE should review this wonderful resource and follow the instructions and requirements included in the slides here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/10XyUK9h17miazuG1lMQDfqyjgplyhFJShUqvYRnCRL0/edit?usp=sharing

Base Layer - This is the term for the specific undergarments that you'll wear under your costume.  For feminine actors the base layer that I always recommend is skin colored tights and a skin colored leotard.  You could also wear a skin colored bra or tank top and skin colored, black, or white compression shorts or dance shorts.  For masculine actors the base layer typically includes a white undershirt or tank top and fitted underwear such as boxer briefs or trunks.  Some actors also like to wear a dance belt and/or compression shorts.  You must bring your base layer to rehearsal on Thursday, 11/3.

You must have a make-up bag for your make-up and a costume bag for your base layer and shoes.  A costume bag can be as simple as a paper or plastic grocery bag.

Lastly, please make sure that you are checking the Remind (thank you Ariana!) EVERY day - there is lots of information that you'll be sent over the next couple weeks.

Have a wonderful break - go over your material, rest, eat your favorite foods, talk to your favorite people and I'll see you Monday.  Thank you for all of your hard work!

Shakespeare Paper Work

 Hi Parents and Students,

Below are the papers you will need to print and have completed by 2:45pm on September 20th to be able to attend the Shakespeare Festival Trip.  Remember that you need to have the medical form NOTARIZED (banks can do this) and attach a copy of the child's insurance card info.  Also, a reminder that ALL fees ($389.00) are due to the main office by September 16th (next Friday).  NO EXCEPTIONS.  I have to finalize all payments that weekend.

I apologize the scanner here is being weird, and so they are JPEGs of the papers, but they work exactly the same.  I will have a detailed and finalized schedule once we are given competition times, which is typically the week before.  It is highly similar to the one I handed out at the Parent Meeting.  Please email me with any further questions.

Last Minute Addams Family Audition Info

 Happy Addams Family audition week!

It was great seeing everyone who was able to attend the workshop yesterday and shout out to Council for organizing and running a great afternoon!

A couple of reminders for your audition:

1. Make sure that you bring your sheet music, grades, audition form, and conflict form to your audition.

2. If you are interested in being considered for Assistant Director, please indicate that on your audition form.  The AD will play a crucial role in helping me with the production and rehearsal process.  They will help with tech as well as performance aspects, including having the opportunity to block and direct 1-2 scenes of the show.  Assistant Directors are very important in our productions here at Alta, and we couldn't make our shows happen without them!

3. If you haven't signed up for an audition time yet, please go to https://linktr.ee/altahightheatre to do so ASAP.

4. Be on time!  I recommend being here and ready for your singing and dance audition 10 minutes before the actual time.

5. HAVE FUN!!!  I'm so excited to see your auditions - slay!

If you are on that final list, you need to be in the Theatre Room THURSDAY (August 26th) at 2:45pm sharp for the first team meeting.  You will also need to INITIAL next to your name on the call board tomorrow before that first meeting to accept your spot.  This is how it's often done at professional theatres and so we are gearing ourselves to operate the same way. I'll see you all tomorrow!

Also, please let your parents know they are REQUIRED to attend the mandatory parent meeting in the PAC Auditorium at 6pm on September 7th.  Also, tomorrow is a GREAT time to pick up Wasatch Books if you wanna fundraise - money for the trip is due on September 16th.  STOKED to see everyone tomorrow and do our first team meeting!

Wasatch Savings Books! FUNDRAISING!

To all parents and students in the theatre department -

Whether you have class fees (Theatre 3, 4, Stage Tech), sweater fees, production fees, trip fees (Shakespeare) we have created a beginning of the year fundraiser for those things.  The money made MUST go to something in the theatre department and is nontransferable.  Every year, we allow students to sell Wasatch Savings Books and people love them!  They sell like hot cakes!

They are 2-for-1 and free coupon books that are all on an app.  You get a mini pamphlet with an activation code and access to thousands of dollars in savings for food, activities, hair-cuts, events, etc. We are currently letting you know the fundraiser is beginning NOW as we are one of the first schools to get them this year, so students can beat out others and sell first. Each book is $30 and when you turn in the money for it, you will be credited half!  That's $15 of each book going into YOUR account to pay for theatre needs.  You simply, sell the book, take the full amount of money to the office and ask them to put it into the Theatre Wasatch Savings Account, and bring Miss Struiksma the receipt - she will then separate out your $15 into your account.  You let HER know which fee you would like to pay with that money (or have it go toward) and she will write that into your account notes.

My suggestion is to check out ONE book, show friends and family, get their money for the books and then pick up the books upon turning in your receipt to Miss Struiksma.  When you check out a book YOU are responsible for the amount ($30 per book) if it gets stolen or lost.  That is why I suggest grabbing ONE and then getting the others once things are paid for in full.  If you have questions, please EMAIL Miss Struiksma at linze.struiksma@canyonsdistrict.org and she will get back to you within 24 hours on weekdays, 48 hours on weekends.

Free money is great, so don't sleep on this opportunity!  Pick up a book today and get selling!

Students can pick them up after school any day in the next few weeks.  This fundraiser will run until September 23rd and then will close and be finalized.  Get sellin'!

Addams Family Audition Packet!!!

Hi everyone!

Here is a link to the audition packet, form, and tentative rehearsal calendar for The Addams Family! You can get a paper copy of the packet in the green room (PAC) or Cline's room (2313) starting tomorrow as well as outside the choir room beginning next week.

Link:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/11b041fHaZKwFGFCOpcSpubXowps0sydzMRHpRAdKcJg/edit

Please read through this information COMPLETELY and CAREFULLY with your parent/guardian and make sure that you have ALL of the required paperwork for your audition on Aug. 31st or Sept. 1st. You'll sign up for an audition time using the QR code in the packet. (If you don't see an Addams Family audition sheet when you scan the QR code, please go through the packet, start working on your audition material, and check back over the next day or two for the sign up sheet!)

You should prepare 16 bars (measures) of a song in the style of the show for your audition. You must bring sheet music for the accompanist and it is HIGHLY recommended that you be memorized. Come prepared to support each other and show off your hard work, preparation, and talent! There will be a dance portion of the audition after the singing portion. Please find the complete details in the packet, including the tentative rehearsal schedule.

We are SO excited to see your auditions and begin working on this fun show! Feel free to email me with any questions.

Shakespeare Ensemble Audition Packet 2022

Hey all!

Here is a link to the FULL packet with most of the paperwork for the trip to review before signing on to the trip. The only thing missing is the medical form to be notarized as this will be handed out after casting at the mandatory Parent Meeting on September 7th @6pm.

LINK: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12x9BsSKMG7VFRidQEghS3mSMIkB3aWwcsUFfcTE1mkg/edit?usp=sharing

Sidenote: This has been a question - students not on Shakespeare Team CAN go on the trip if there are spots left on the bus/in rooms. They must also be enrolled in a theatre class, pay the fees, complete the forms, and agree to behave in a manner that represents Alta Theatre Department. We invite those unable to do team to still come explore and celebrate the work of Shakespeare! If you would like to go on the trip, and are NOT on team, I need to know by September 2nd and receive an email from your parent affirming they are okay with your participation and willing to pay the trip fee in full.

To get started, look for a monologue that you really feel you can get behind. You can find a good list of monologues at https://www.bard.org/competition under the Shakespeare Scene Resources section or at https://www.shakespeare-monologues.org/home. I look forward to seeing you on the 23rd!

*** We have a chance for anyone to workshop their monologues with some of our upper class-men before auditions on August 22nd from 2:30-3:30pm in the PAC Green Room – just show up and we’ll give you someone to work with and some tips! :)

Hard-copies of the packet will be posted on the call-board outside of the green room in the PAC the first day of school – please go over things with your parents. It is the same information as in the link above. All who are on team get to and must perform in Night of Shakespeare on September 28th and attend/fund the trip to Cedar City for competition Sept. 29th-October 1st. Rehearsals will begin on the 25th and 26th of August from 2:30-5pm and then be most days after school at 5pm-7pm, with times beginning earlier closer to competition. We are excited to see what y’all prepare for us and are stoked to get the show on its feet! 🎭 Feel free to email me with any questions!

Remember, you can still audition for the ensemble and go on the trip next year regardless of if you do these auditions. I would LOVE to have you all take a shot at an IE, however.  Auditions are the 18th and hardcopies of the packet and sign-ups are in the green room on the announcement board.  Best of luck and break legs!

Theatre Council 2022-2023!

A huge thank you to all who applied for Theatre Council for the 2022-2023! I've said it before, but I'll say it again (and I mean it) - y'all made this a very very hard decision. There were many great ideas and applicants this year.

Listed below is the Theatre Council list for the 2022-2023 school year:

President – Andrew McHenry
Vice President – Landon Horrocks
Secretary – Annie Kemp
Publicity/Activities – Willa Grimmer
Historian – Ruby Gardner
Financial/Fundraising Chair – Kassie Holt
Improv Chair – Alex Liljenquist
Tech Rep – Tim Holt
Sophomore Rep – Tessa Osborne

Congrats to our new council! I ask that all members of the Alta Theatre Family support their peers in this decision.  If you did not make it onto council this time, know you are still amazing and a lot of great candidates applied.  If you would like more direct feedback on what to work on in the future, please feel free to email me over the next week.

For all new AND old council members, there will be a short meeting Tuesday morning (May 3rd) at 8am in the Green Room of the PAC.  Additionally, all NEW council members (and returning) need to plan and meet right after school on Friday, May 6th to be measured for sweaters.  If you are a returning member, BRING YOUR SWEATER THAT DAY! I will have Andrew McHenry reach out and make a group chat for the new council members.  Thank you all and I love you (appropriately)! :)
