Murder Mystery Parent/Guardian Email

Dear Parent/Guardians,

Several  parents emailed that the email I sent hadn't gone through. A HUGE thank you to your students for mentioning it and for checking in.  Here is the message in case the resent email was still sassy.  Again, thank you SO much!

First, thank you so much for allowing your students to be a part of this year's Murder Mystery cast.  We are excited to have rehearsals underway and watch everyone grow in their acting and improv skills.  I wanted to give you the heads up that tickets are on sale NOW!  We will have shows at 5 pm and 7:30 pm on Friday, 12/8. Tickets in advance are $16 and $18 at the door and include charcuterie, desserts, swig-style soda drinks, and of course the show!  That said there are ONLY 100 tickets PER SHOW.  After they are sold out, we CANNOT add more seats and food. Please buy early!  The links to the 5 pm and 7:30 pm show tickets are below:

Another reason for emailing is to ask for help in respect to food needs for the Murder Mystery.  We take care of costuming, production needs, decorations, etc. and will be buying a large portion of the food for the event.  We are in need of parent/guardians to purchase specific food items and store refrigerated items until bringing them to the PAC on show day.
On show day, parent/guardians will bring their food items either at 4:00pm or 6:30pm to ensure things stay cold.  I wish we had a kitchen here to use, but with us being housed in the PAC, we do not.

I have created and included a sign-up sheet for food needs.  PLEASE know that the only way to make this work is to have everyone help.  Each parent/guardian will need to sign up for at least one food need.  If you can sign up for more than one, please do so.  You can ABSOLUTELY be fully reimbursed for your food purchases.  Please just write your name and address on your receipt and send it to rehearsal with your student.  Please sign up by this Thursday, 11/30.  The sign up sheet is linked below.

Lastly, we are looking for one (or more) parent/guardian(s) who can take pictures of our awesome Murdery Mystery cast starting at 3 pm next Monday, 12/4.  Please email me if that's something that you can help us with.

Thank you in advance for your help and don't forget to buy your tickets :)

Blue Stockings - Spring Play - Initial Information!

A huge thank you to council members Kassie and Tessa for helping me
announce our spring show - Blue Stockings by Jessica Swale.

Y'all…I read what felt like a million scripts between May and August searching
for the show that I wanted to direct for our spring play.  I wanted something with
characters that we could dig into and explore and something with a message we
could explore as well.  I FINALLY stumbled upon Jessica Swale's play, Blue Stockings,
and knew that this HAD to be our spring play.  To my knowledge, we are the first
Canyons School to produce and perform this play, which is super exciting!

Background information: Blue Stockings is set in the late 1800's at the first
university for female students, Girton College, which is just outside of Cambridge.
As the play's group of protagonists navigate what it means to be educated women
to themselves and society, Girton's principal is also petitioning for her female students
to have the right to graduate.

Audition Information: Auditions will be held on Thursday, December 14th.
Please prepare a one-minute contemporary dramatic monologue.  You are
not required to use a British dialect for auditions, but those called back will be
asked to.  So I say…give it a try!  I'm looking for a British RP dialect, not
Cockney.  British RP is what we might consider the "traditional" British.
Julie Andrews, Emma Watson, and Emma Thompson are great folks to listen to
as you're practicing this dialect.  Callbacks will be held on Friday, December 15th.
Auditions and callbacks will be in the Green Room of the PAC.

Upcoming Info: You can expect a digital version of the audition packet to be
posted on the blog by Wednesday as well as the audition sign-up sheet.  Printed
packets will be available by the end of the week.

Understudies: Some characters will have understudies.  We will have an Understudy
Performance Night on Thursday, 2/15.  Those cast as understudies will perform the
other nights as speaking or non-speaking ensemble roles.  For the Understudy
performance, lead actors will perform their understudy's ensemble role - essentially
swapping for the night!

Resources for Audition Prep: Take a look at the character breakdown, historical
context, overview, and detailed synopsis HERE.  You can read a PDF
version of the script HERE.

I'm so excited to begin work on this show after Murder Mystery and see your
auditions on 12/14!

"Mean Girls" Cast Notes for 11/11

Cast Notes for Saturday's run on 11/11:

-In opening "It Roars" when you're in the at the school, you don't just have to smile through that dance... how do you feel about Cady and let that shine through!

 - Alix; will you project more on your lines?  Thank you!

- Always be moving in character.  Dances are honestly looking awesome!  Now, when you're not directly dancing, but moving through space in a song or between one, be in character.

 - Xylia, great facials in "Where Do You Belong?"

 - Ruh and Sadie- awesome character on "Where Do You Belong!?"

 - "Meet the Plastics" --> Ava and Nora, awesome expressions!

 - Adam, project out whether you have a mic or not; nice reactions!

- After Janis says "and spies" going into the Cheese Fries scene, please talk so there is a bit of filler before Gretchen's line. Die out when Gretchen starts.

 - Miranda, your line "Welcome to America," can you talk with me on Monday about a suggestion... I have an idea on those beats.  Getting better with energy and projection - keep going big!

 - You guys, dances really are looking awesome - keep it up and energy the whole time!

 - Singing is also much better; please please EVERYONE sing!

 - "Sexy"; Layna and Bella you were killin' it!

  - Ethan and Kason fun exchange at the end of "Sexy" into the scene - so funny!

 - Everyone, thank you for talking leading into the "Someone Gets Hurt" scene.

 - Can about ten more people use red solo cups in that scene?  No one in the left, please - but a few others. Otherwise, it's weird only Aaron uses one... make some choices and some people grab one coming back into the scene before "Someone Gets Hurt."

 - Jacob, I LOVE how engaged you were with being mad at Aaron, but DO NOT MISS THE LIFT PREP.

 - On Monday, can we please meet at 2:30pm for "lift call?"  We should have been doing it the whole time... let's start now and each night we do a "lift call" to just practice both really quick through.  On show nights it will be right at 5:30pm sharp and all MJST be on time. Thanks!

 - Revenge Party: can ensemble have more diction, please?!

 - RUBY: Get a dollar from me.

 - Nate, when Glen Coco leaves that door where you're waiting to come out, do NOT let the audience see you!  Also, dance like you did before and go big like before - it was so fun! Oh, and please don't take the head of the costume off till through the door on stage right.

 - Josh, better expressions before you left!

- Kenna, with "pusher points" only touch her shoulders.  Also, don't pre-know she'll say Aaron.

- Jacob, in the talent show section interact with the audience for a bit more to give plastics a few moments more for the change - just like 20 seconds of improv, appropriate banter.

 - Miranda your yelling as you leave is SO GOOD! Hahaha

 - Fearless; keep it up!  It's just my favorite, so feel it every time- feel what you are saying. :)

 - STOP; I would love more facial expressions and less faces of concentration! Also, remember that Jazz Hands aren't still - they shake.

 - Kate and Josh; watch any mic breathing and really project whether on a mic or not.

 - Miranda, can you try a comedic beat choice on "I know a lot of stuff?"  I think that would add good variation and be fun!

- More talking as people enter on "Who's House Is This?"  Can three or you maybe whoop and holler for Izzy's tumbling?  Izzy - you look awesome!

- "World Burn" everyone had great expressions throughout!  Keep it up! Thank you for keeping out of the middle. Nate, stay in the back of the fight and don't move to front groups - I want that just girls and I want you to the dummy sooner.

 - Kenna, don't cut off Jacob's line in the scene when you enter with your glasses crazy (love that choice, by the way).  Let me know if you can't hear him.

- Jacob, "SAD, old drug pusher" - diction on that line.

 - During the scene before "Rather Be Me" when Regina claims she's a "victim," can I get more small verbal reactions and scoffs?  Fill the space. Also, some more verbal reactions and nervous laughter upon seeing other's hands raised.

 - "We as females..."  That line, Kenna - put that OUT to the audience for more power and then turn back to them "like this," and fall.

- "Rather Be Me" was SO fun!  Keep it up!  Some standouts --> Lilly, Reagan, and Jane!

- "Do Your Thing" I need MORE DICTION!  Kason, your character choices there are gold!  In the "downtime" where Aaron and Cady are flirting, can the Calvin or Ethan do stretches? Haha!

 - Calvin did a GREAT job in that scene of waiting to see if Ruby would get the answer - very clear reactions!

-  Kassie, great timing and character!

 - Stars; don't rush, y'all!  Be in time with your calf clicks and SING OUT when you need to sing! Ladies, make sure side ribbons in dress are tucked in - don't cut them unless it's yours.  Then, do what you want if it is. Think about what you're saying and feeling here- give it as much emotion as "Fearless!"

CAST:  Thank you.  Thank you for the hard work and effort!  Please come on Monday ready to GO HARD and really give all you got for the last practice.  ALL must be ready completely by 3:15pm in the green room and mic checks will start at 3:05pm SHARP.  Thus, leads be ready by 3:05pm.  Afterward, we will do a little warm up in the auditorium at 3:20pm and then vocal warmups and diction in the green room.  We will begin the run ON TIME at a 3:40pm downbeat and HAVE SO MUCH FUN!

When our run is done, we will eat dinner and do notes/assess needs!  You have Tuesday off (please think about going to the Murder Mystery Audition Workshop) and then Wednesday you need to be at school NO LATER THAN 4:30pm as we have the Gala that night.  We will talk through logistics on Monday! Those doing "lift call," on Monday I will pull you at 5pm to do it early on.  We will talk more opening night on Monday - enjoy the Sunday downtime and rest!

"Mean Girls" Ticket Info and Reminders

 Hey Team!

First, THANK YOU to all the parents who have been helping behind the scenes with dinners, concessions, picking up materials, taken headshots, break-a-legs, tickets, etc.  Your efforts are not unseen and greatly appreciated.  Also THANK YOU to the cast and crew starting out - you guys are making this show work and you're working hard - I see that and I appreciate you. Know that I am so excited with all of the choices you're making on stage and the kindness you are showing one another - I really love working with you and am excited about tech week.

A huge reminder of two things happening tomorrow.  First, tomorrow is our next day of the WEAR PINK contest and help advertise!  Please consider dressing up and posting/entering the contest to help start spread the word about our show opening in THREE WEEKS!  The information is below - remember IF you have a private account, you must screenshot the entry and DM our Alta Theatre Instagram page!

Second, tickets for our Opening Night Gala are going on sale tomorrow!  We are excited to host a little hors d'oeuvres and character interaction soiree the opening night of our show at 6pm.  Those who attend will receive some amazing finger foods at this year's "Club Rush" hour, interaction with the characters themselves, entertainment and some prime photo booth opportunities. Also, those who purchase before next Wednesday when ALL tickets go live will be able to choose their opening night seats first before the general public.  Think about coming out and supporting the students with a special Gala ticket!

HEADS UP: For those who got a Gala flyer, the address for tickets is not correct.  I greatly apologize, but at the last minute we needed to switch our ticketing vendor to ensure we could have reserved seating.  Thus, the NEW link will be posted on here and the Instagram Page tomorrow evening.  Thank you for the kindness and understanding!

Wear pink tomorrow, start spreading the word and get ready to buy tickets!!!

Here's the poster to post up to advertise as well.  A huge thank you to Hallie Mastersen for creating such a great poster for us this year. :)

CAST REMINDER - grade checks are due on Monday.
This means on SUNDAY you need to print your grades at home OR MONDAY IN THE LIBRARY before rehearsal you need to print your grades and bring them with you.  PLEASE make this a time I don't need to search anyone out... it could earn you some candy if EVERYONE brings there's on Monday.... meaning, it will.  It will earn you candy. Get your grades where they need to be this week - I'm rooting for you!

Lastly, TO ALL - if ANYONE has a connection to a jazzy (the scooters for people at grocery marts), we are looking for one for the show... One thought is if anyone knows SOMEONE at a grocery store who would let us borrow one for a few days and we'd give them a shoutout in the program.... I know that's a weird request, but it's needed so PLEASE if you have any connections, I would greatly appreciate it!

1) Tomorrow, grade checks are due.  PRINT your grades and bring them to rehearsal after school tomorrow - if you are missing rehearsal bring them earlier or by the next day. You will fold them in half, hand them to Addi and she will give them to me once all collected.  No exceptions - I need to check everyone.

2) If you have ANY donations - clothing, accessories, props - we need them ASAP!  I have some parents coming tomorrow to help sort through whatever we get so we can begin costuming and filling in the gaps. Please bring donations TOMORROW!  Anything that time period helps!

3) If you are on this list below, our costume team would like to see you after school ON OCTOBER 10TH for a little mini-fitting at 2:45-3:45pm in the Green Room of the PAC; they might not need you the whole time, but please stop by for what you can: Abby Carpenter, Leah Memmott, Emma Sweat, Hallee Wasden, Kason Seamans, Ethan Regan, Niv Raz, Jakob Payne, Kennadee Hewlett, Aubree Hewlett, Madelynn Chatwin, Xylia Stennet Luke, Christian Holyfield, Izzy Walbeck, and Connor Lyon.  If this is NOT possible, send me an email. Mean Girls UPDATE - Grade Checks, Due Dates, Team Day, and Accessory Search!

Hello Team!

Here are the highlights of this email - PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING!

1) Your FIRST Grade Check for Musical will be on October 9th.  This means you will PRINT OUT and physically bring your grades to me at that rehearsal.  If you are missing that rehearsal, send them with a friend or bring them in ahead of rehearsal time.  That means, you have TWO WEEKS from today to get grades in a solid place to be able to do this show.  I have to stick to grade rules, so work hard these two weeks without set rehearsals.

2) You will be tested sometime on that week of the 9th on dances and music as needed, so don't leave it sit.  Practice these next two weeks without set rehearsals!  If there is a day or two you would like to come in and practice with the videos or dance captains, reach out to them and see their availability.  You can also just come with a group of you and practice in the lobby today through Thursday after school or next week on Monday or Tuesday.  You CAN practice Wed-Fri next week, but I will not be here to let you in as Shakespeare will be on trip. Dance videos are uploaded here: Dance Videos

3) Night of Shakespeare is next Tuesday Night at 7pm!  Tickets are sold at the door for $5 and in Struik's classes, you can turn in that ticket for 20 points extra credit.  It would mean the world to have you come send off the team with a TON of support!  It is also... OCTOBER 3RD!  Thus, to celebrate "our new favorite day," if you show up that night and attend to support AND wear pink, you can get a prize by seeing Struiks! Come support all of team's hard work!!!

4) Lastly, PARENTS (or students ASK parents): We are in need of early 2000s accessories and phones you would be willing to lend or donate to the show.  This is proving the hardest to find cheap.  For example, big chunky jewelry and belts, sunglasses, bags, hair clips, trucker hats (hats in general), bandanas, and FLIP PHONES!  If you have old things you want to get rid of, we will gladly take them off your hand and would LOVE those as soon as possible.  If you have any of those things and can send them with your student by October 9th, that would be amazing!

Thanks for all you are each doing to already make this show a success - I really am loving working with this cast and seeing all of your incredible skills shine! :)

Mean Girls - UPDATED for all cast on costume needs and dances! CAST READ ALL!!!

 Hey Team!

I am so proud of all of the work you have already put in so far.  These past two weeks you have had a lot thrown at you and your hard work is paying off!  This is going to be a great show. A couple of reminders...

READ THROUGH THIS WHOLE EMAIL!!!   IT IS IMPORTANT INFO!

1)  You are responsible to know your music inside and out - if I feel singing isn't where it needs to be, we will have to add some extra hours for practice time and testing time.  I really would like to avoid that.  Thus, my request is that the time you have off the next two weeks you use to get solid on your music and feel ready to go in case testing DOES happen mid October. I want our audiences to be blown away this year with the epic choral sound and I think this is the show we can do that!

2) WE WILL TALK ABOUT THIS IN DETAIL TODAY! You are responsible for getting a few things for your costume/makeup - those things are listed below:

 - Gentleman need a white or skin tone tank top and black or neutral shorts for under your costume; this is so modesty and appropriate attire is always taking place even with costume changes and will be worn each night of the show and tech weeks.  These are not in leu of other undergarments - they go on top. I would SUGGEST getting two so you can wash things as needed and not forget them. Here are some suggested links, but you can find your own too:

White Undershirts

Black Under-Shorts

 - Ladies need a neutral undershirt to keep on at all times and black under shorts. I like wearing a snapping nude leotard with black shorts over it, but again, do what is best for you - an undershirt is fine. Here is what I use and they use at a lot of local community theatres. You also need Opaque Nude Tights - EVERYONE needs them! Make sure they aren't see through.

Nude Leotard with Snaps

Nude Tank-Top

Black Shorts

Nude Tights

HAVE THESE THINGS ABOVE AT REHEARSAL ON OCTOBER 23rd!!!!!

ALL GENDERS: We need you to look through and bring a pair of jeans you could wear/pants of the 2000s... it's a lot of what is worn today and pants YOU are comfortable in are ridiculously hard to find for us.  So, you can use something you own and check it off with me (or our costume lady, Tamara) or buy something from Savers/DI and turn in the receipt for reimbursement - we will then keep what you buy if you turn in a receipt. We are also asking you to bring a pair of shoes that could work for your costumes.  Again, modern ones like Converse, Doc Martins, plain shoes are totally fine.  They are SO hard to find for individual's feet!  Again, you can buy from Savers/DI if needed, but if you turn in a receipt we will keep them.  If everyone can provide pants and shoes that might work - we can fill in the gaps!  Each person will have two outfits with layers, so if you have other skirts, shirts, jackets to share or you want to use yourself that look the time period, PLEASE bring them.

ALSO, some people have been donating softly used clothing, backpacks, lunch sacks, etc. that are early 2000s style - THANK YOU!  IF you have anything to donate, please bring that in by October 3rd (our new favorite day!) so we can go through things and sort possibilities.  If you are passionate about your character dressing a certain style, you'll be the one finding things IF we don't have those options - otherwise, we will have some options for you and put you in what works best for our show vision.

You will check off your ideas with Tamara on the 10th or 11th of October - bring them with you OR bring a CLEAR picture on your phone of all things to show.  IF you are someone who struggles to find things in your size (small, large, whatever) please plan to show us your things on OCTOBER 10TH!  We want to get a jump start on helping you!

I will provide a clear bin for all accessories and shoes - you will label it with your name and stack them under your "getting ready space" in the makeup room.  If you need more than that bin for hair and makeup things - we will talk more about this in October - you will need to provide another box or shoebox.

For hair and makeup I am going to offer a lot of freedom based on 2000s hairstyles.  I will post some ideas in two weeks you can experiment with over Fall Break.  Then, you will be prepared to show me those hairstyles and makeup choices that last week of October. I will provide butterfly clips and a few crimpers... :)

** PLASTICS: You will need to start looking at what heels/platforms, etc. you may want to wear... we need to get them in the next two weeks to practice dancing in them! Think things that will match with pinks and whites predominantly.

**Featured Dancers: You will need character shoes for the opening; please see me if this is an issue.   Susan prefers tan, but if that's not possible let me know.  Also, if you need tap shoes let me know and I know London has a chunk of extra ones.  I would like to use all of you in STOP if possible.

** ANYONE WHO WANTS TO TAP: If you want to get taps and learn, you can try out for a spot in STOP.  We will use as many people as can keep up with the choreography and are willing to learn... so it's your call if you're in an ensemble and wanna give it a shot.  I say go for it, but if that's the case, get tap shoes NOW!

ANIMAL COLORS:

Lions – blacks; these are dancers need all blacks

Birds – blues

Gorillas – dark dark brown clothes

Gazelles – cream colors or light light brown

Elephants – gray clothing

3) The link to the dances is below.  You will find all of them uploaded to that google drive as soon as possible from here on out - review them and know your part back and forth.  We do NOT have a lot of review days because time is crunched.... Therefore, YOU need to make the effort to practice in downtime and free-time and be solid.  We will be testing dances that last week of October and adjusting accordingly.  Please take that as motivation - if you want a spot in front during spacing time, you better work hard for it! If you need help, London (Susan's assistant), Miranda Stokes (Ensemble Dance Captain) and Ava Stagg (Featured Dance Captain) are great people to ask.  They will be reviewing and knowing dances to help you out, but is YOUR responsibility to ask for help and not at the last minute.

Dance Videos Found Here!

4)  Lastly, start gearing up for a fun contest for the WHOLE SCHOOL.  The second week of October we will begin #pinkwednesdays where students can win prizes for uploading pictures to Instagram with that hashtag and having the best "Mean Girls" and Pink outfit!  Prizes will range from candy, stickers, other swag and even a grand prize of free tickets! Spread the word to get outfits ready for EVERY Wednesday starting October 11th!

Here is the updated October calendar - please note changes on pink days and review needs:

Again, I am excited to share this incredible show with our community and come together these next few months.  The limit to how much fun we can have does not exist!  See what I did there?  Not sorry...

"Mean Girls" Finalized Calendar and Updates!

 Hey Team,

Here are some reminders for our "Mean Girl" cast, plus the updated calendar!  First a reminder that fees are due Friday, September 22nd by 2:45pm.  Please have things in on time!  You will pay the fees in one of two ways.

1) Bring a check or cash to the main office and they will deposit it - then bring the receipt to the Green Room in the PAC and put it in the envelope on the Call Board.

2) OR, pay the fee on Skyward (it should show up by tomorrow on there) and print the receipt - bring the receipt to the Green Room in the PAC and put it in the envelope on the Call Board.

Next, below are pictures of our updated calendar.  Every student went home with one on Monday, but there are a few extra hardcopies on the Call Board in the Green Room of the PAC.  Please THOROUGHLY review the dates and times and be sure you are present and ON TIME when you are called.  If there are questions, shoot them to me ASAP - otherwise, I expect you to know the calendar.

Remember to be practicing the music as we learn it and that we may conduct little pop-up quizzes to be sure you're solid.  This is not said to scare you, but to let you know you are expected to be on top of music... since it's a MUSICal. ;) If you want access to the "Mean Girls" tracks to practice with please google MTI Player, click on it, and scroll to the bottom of that page.  Plug in the code MEA2125694 and you're set!

Dance will be uploaded as we record them, so check back for a link to that google file.  We are so excited to begin this production's journey with you!  Here's to an incredible and FETCH experience! :)
